Create Consulting Engineers - Witham

Aim:
To restore a section of disused backwater channel on the River Brain in Witham, Essex, as well as develop an associated wetland area.
The main driver of the project was the European Commission Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) which aims to contribute towards ensuring biodiversity through conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora within the European community.
The restoration of the backwater channel was designed with the European Union Water Framework Directive (2000/00/EC) objectives in mind and so, where possible, provided habitat improvement measures for various mammals, birds and plants, thus improving the ecological status of the River Brain.

Create's Role:

Create Water were enlisted to provide detailed design of the backwater channel. A model was built using the ISIS modelling software in conjunction with a 3D-GPS site survey which allowed the various flows and velocities in the River Brain to be accurately modelled with the proposed backwater channel in place to ensure the flow in the main channel was not significantly affected.
