Welcome Gemma Manache

10.12.2018

Create Consulting Engineers would like to welcome Dr. Gemma Manache as a Technical Director- water.

Gemma holds a BSc in Civil Engineering and an MSc in hydraulic engineering from Aleppo University, and a PhD in hydrology and hydraulic Engineering from Free University Brussels.

She has almost 37 years’ experience in water engineering industry and academic institutions during which she provided technical expertise and project management for a variety of water engineering projects. This included hydrological studies, design and modelling of water supply and wastewater networks, river water-quality modelling, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of complex water quality models, flood risk mapping, strategic flood risk assessment, integrated water quality modelling at a catchment scale and river compliance assessment against WFD and UPM standards.

Gemma’s work experience was gained in different academic institutions, research centres, and engineering consultancies in Syria, Belgium, Luxemburg, USA and the UK (Assistant lecturer at Aleppo University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, project engineer at Tractebel Development Engineering, researcher at Free University Brussels, senior research engineer and project manager at Public Research Centre Henri Tudor, associate researcher at Marquette University, principal engineer at Faber Maunsell/EACOM, principal civil engineer and technical manager at MWH, technical director at ERM and independent consultant at MANACHE consulting).

During her work in the UK, Gemma established and developed an expertise in the field of integrated water quality modelling (IWQM) within MWH in AMP4, which resulted in a big saving to the water company in terms of wastewater infrastructures needed to protect the receiving water. Following the successful application of the integrated modelling approach, studies covering ten river catchments in the North West were included in United Utilities’ AMP5 delivery programme. Gemma was a key person in the implementation and the successful delivery of this large program (development of the methodology and the business case for OFWAT, costing, planning, team building and training, technical and project leadership and management, decision making, etc.).

In addition to UU’s AMP5, Gemma was also responsible for the delivery of large IWQM programme for Yorkshire Water, during which she was managing teams located in different offices, and some modelling projects for Thames Water. She was involved in the decision making with the clients and the discussions with the Environment Agency. For all AMP5’s projects (about20 integrated water quality studies), Gemma exceeded client’s expectations by providing technical advises and delivering high quality and successful projects.

Since 2015, Gemma was working as independent consultant in Belgium providing expertise in water, wastewater and river engineering and contributing to a number of bids in her area of expertise.
